2) Why did you choose this name?.
It’s easy. Because Smirnov is my real last name! (my first name is Ivan)
3) Tell us about your artistic career, ups and downs included.
It’s been a struggle. I was born and raised in Russia where I made my first demos. At the age of 19, I decided to take a huge risk and go to Los Angeles alone! After hard work and some luck, I did end up in Hollywood where I decided to pursue my career further. The lowest point came when I found myself homeless sitting in front of some McDonalds with my guitar… The only way was up! I later met and got to work with a lot of talented musicians and producers! In 2010 I released my debut album “Privet Earth!” under the name “SMIRNOV”. Two songs from the album, “The saddest boy in the world” and “The sunshine never cries”, made their way onto 2011 Grammy ballot in 2 categories: Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance! The album has also received a lot of great reviews in the US, the UK and Europe (especially, Italy!). I released a new EP “ICE” in late 2011. 4) What is the genre that best represents you?. It was easy in your country express yourself with your music?
I don’t like to fit my music into any genre or category. But the main ingredient here is ROCK. I also enjoy combining musical opposites such as Punk and Classical Music. It wasn’t easy to grow as a rock artist in Russia since I write most of my songs in English. I had to go abroad to learn, improve and impress. In Russia, I express myself more in poetry and novel-writing.
5) You like to try to get new sounds?
Yes, I love experimenting with new sounds! To me, it’s like going to Space!
6) Tell us about yourself. Who is Smirnov?
I’m just a guy who has a dream of turning his life into music. Because to me, Music is the language of Honesty. And through Honesty, we can find Love.
7) Do you excited more heat from the public or 'masterful execution of one of your songs? Why?
I always pay attention to the quality of performance and recording. But most of all, the song has to connect with the audience. You got to give people a NEW FEELING through your music. And when it happens, they respond. And that is magical!
8) What plans do you have in mind for the future?
I have many! Shoot a couple of new videos, record and release more singles and albums, would love to come and play live in Italy!!!
9) Tell us about the 'experience of successful promotion of your best songs.
It’s always exciting when promotion is successful! And for that, I have to thank my fans and the channel that’s playing SMIRNOV!!!
10) A taste, a sound and a fragrance that describe your music.
I imagine my music as having...
A taste of good surprise, a sound of fist-pumping energy and a fragrance of novelty in the air.
